Respirator fit testing – an important part of our health and safety work
Within our operations, we continuously work with Technical Cleanliness and carry out various cleanliness analyses in our laboratory. During these activities, staff handle chemicals and therefore use several types of protective clothing and respirators. A correctly fitted respirator is crucial – if the mask does not seal tightly, there is a risk that harmful substances will penetrate, which can lead to serious consequences for health.
From January 2025, the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s new regulation AFS 2023:11 for tight-fitting respirators apply. The regulations place higher requirements on personal protective equipment not only being of the correct type but also being individually adapted for each user. The purpose is to ensure that the equipment provides the protection required in environments where airborne risks may occur.
Because face shape and fit vary between individuals, the same mask model cannot be assumed to fit everyone. Therefore, at Nyli we carried out fit tests of our respirators. The aim is to ensure that each employee has a mask that provides optimal protection.
In connection with the test, our staff also received more in-depth information about cleaning, storage and correct handling of the respirators. This knowledge helps us to further strengthen and develop our internal procedures, creating an even safer working environment.
As a result, it was identified that one of our employees needed to switch to a different mask model that provided a better fit – a clear example of why fit testing is an important measure.
By combining the right equipment, continuous testing and updated procedures, we actively work to ensure a safe and secure working environment for all our staff.
